Identifying disadvantaged communities
The City of Stonnington is located in Melbourne's inner south-eastern suburbs and includes some of Melbourne's most prestigious residential localities. It includes the suburbs of Armadale, Glen Iris (part), Kooyong, Malvern, Malvern East, Prahran, South Yarra (part), Toorak and Windsor (part).
The Council has an online community profile (profile.id), social atlas (atlas.id) and population forecast (forecast.id) and makes them available to the community via their website.
Stonnington is well known as an affluent inner-city area. However it also houses a large community in 60s-style, tower block public housing. Analysing LGA-wide statistics masks these extremes within the municipality.
By using atlas.id, which presents very fine-grain thematic maps of the municipality, Council planners were able to identify this community within a community, map its characteristics, and show that not only is it disadvantaged in relation to other parts of Stonnington, but it has one of the highest levels of disadvantage in Melbourne.
The presentation of the information in thematic maps is very powerful, enabling Council to present the case for funding for this community in a powerful way.
What products did they use?
