About the Gippsland Region

The Gippsland is forecast to account for 2% of the total population growth of Victoria between 2021 and 2046.

The Gippsland region is an extensive area covering the eastern area of Victoria, stretching from the easternmost borders of the Greater Melbourne Metropolitan area to the Victorian border with NSW. It includes many regional councils: Bass Coast Shire, Baw Baw Shire, East Gippsland Shire, Latrobe City, South Gippsland Shire and Wellington Shire.

The area is predominantly rural with significant mining operations in the Latrobe Council area. It has several large population centres, including Bairnsdale, Drouin, Korrumburra, Leongatha, Moe,  Morwell, Traralgon, Warragul and    Wonthaggi, as well as coastal holiday and retiree locations such as Phillip Island, Inverloch and Lakes Entrance.

Key findings

Gippsland

Over the forecast period the Latrobe - Gippsland SA4 population will grow from around 300,000 in 2021 to around 395,000 people in 2046 (an increase of 32% to the 2021 population), an increase of approximately 95,000. this represents an average annual growth rate of 1.11%.

Growth is predominantly focused around  population centres within the region, and  particularly the greenfield growth areas of Warrigul and Drouin, which account for 36% of total population growth to 2046. Warrigul is the fastest growing SA2, increasing by around 20,000 people to a population of 43,000  (an annual growth rate of 2.52%), whilst Drouin grows by 15,000 to a population of 39,000 (an annual growth rate of 2.26%).

Wonthaggi - Inverloch SA2 also experiences relatively large growth of 12,000 persons over the period, mainly due to coastal development (particularly around San Remo) and greenfield development around the fringes of Wonthaggi. Finally, Traralgon too is forecast to grow, with development based mainly in the Traralgon East SA2 which is forecast to grow by about 7,000 people mainly through the development of greenfield opportunities on the eastern edge of the town.

Many the more rural SA2s, like Bruthen - Omeo, Yarram, Foster and Orbost remain relatively stable over the period, experiencing relatively little change. This also applies to the Morwell SA2, which experiences  a modest growth of 632 persons over the period (a rate of 1.17% annual growth).
