Wollongong City Council engaged .id to explore the local economy from a jobs and resident employment perspective. They were particularly after an analysis of the likely future trajectory of the economy and an identification of what job targets would be required to achieve desired labour market outcomes.

Our Method

.id adopted a strategic methodology to meet the council’s needs.

We identified where the Wollongong economy is now and what has been influencing change over time. This included exploring worker versus employed resident differences, dominant / emerging industry analysis, and journey to work patterns of strategic industries.

We then looked at what might happen going forward. This stage incorporated analysing the employment implications of forecast population growth, forecast jobs growth, major projects, and macro trends.

The final stage involved identifying what growth targets (above business as usual) would be needed to meet Council’s chosen desired outcomes and evaluating the feasibility of these targets.

Results

.id prepared a story about the City of Wollongong economy that has been used to directly inform strategic planning, investment priorities and ultimately the development of interventions to leverage opportunities and address challenges. Our recommended targets were presented to Council and subsequently adopted.
