The Client

The City of Darebin

Challenge

Darebin Council needed a concise presentation about the local economy to support their engagement with local businesses.

Highlights

.id presented an economic analysis of the Darebin economy that covered its recent performance, competitive industries and business outlook.

Our Method

.id analysed the economic drivers with an economic story about Darebin and its place in the regional and larger macro environment. Our approach was designed to better inform Council about the locations strategic strengths, weaknesses and gaps and how these have developed overtime, rather than repeating factual statements and presenting data.

Results

The outcome for Council is an up-to-date evidence base to support engagement with businesses and ultimately support a review of their Economic Development Strategy.

Economic Spotlight on Darebin

In 2023, our economic consulting team was invited by Darebin City Council to present our findings from the State of the Regions dataset at the Darebin Economic Summit.

This presentation was based on our Economic Health Check consulting report which we prepare for councils all across Australia.

Here were the key takeaways from the presentation:

    1. Diverse Industries and specialisations as a strength
This diversity not only fosters innovation but also promotes resilience in the face of economic challenges.
    2. Evolving Demographics
Businesses looking to thrive in Darebin should pay close attention to the evolving demographics. A strong and consistent population growth is projected across most age groups, particularly the "Parents and Homebuilders" (35-49) segment. Tailoring products and services to this group's needs presents a significant opportunity for growth.
    3. Hybrid work
The rise of hybrid work has opened a new market in Darebin's suburbs. With more people working remotely, businesses now have a chance to capture daytime and after-work spending by catering to their needs.
    4. The digital economy demands new skills
As e-commerce continues its rise, businesses must ensure they have the necessary skills to navigate.
    5. Attracting and retaining talent
Attracting and retaining talent in the face of worker shortages requires proactive strategies. With many employees seeking affordable housing options in Melbourne's outer north, businesses in Darebin need to adapt.
