Economic Spotlight on Port Adelaide Enfield
In 2023, our consultants conducted an Economic Health Check for the City of Port Adelaide Enfield's economy as the City Council looked to explore recent trends and identify what factors or industry changes were driving the economy. Here's what we found.
Industry specialisation
The COVID-19 shift towards online shopping has boosted the Transport and Warehousing sectors, crucial for the region's strategy on manufacturing and logistics. The city has developed specialisations in Manufacturing, Transport and Warehousing, Utilities, Other Services (automotive and machinery repair and maintenance) and Construction. These industries have grown faster than the Greater Adelaide average in recent years in terms of jobs. These industries have a strong export exposure and therefore can support expansion beyond the local market.
Demographic evolution
An influx of highly qualified professionals and new migrants, particularly from India, has helped reduce unemployment levels, though socio-economic challenges remain in some areas.
Commuting to and from work
A large majority of workers travel into the area for work, further highlighting the need for strategic planning to balance local employment opportunities with infrastructure capacity to avoid congestion.
Retail and commercial development
Emerging residential and commercial developments aim to diversify retail offerings and enhance local employment, aligning with the region's economic development goals.
Strengths and Opportunities in the Green Economy
The Green Sector in the City of Port Adelaide Enfield is experiencing growth and becoming increasingly advanced and integrated with the broader economy. The City has particular strengths in waste treatment, remediation and materials recovery. In 2021, the Green sector accounted for almost 2% of the City's jobs and 3.3% of the GRP<.
